Go Paperless

Go Paperless

Paperless – Good For You.

Good For Your Patients.

Good For the Environment.

We have been working directly with Executive Directors and Boards of Pharmacies to advocate for a digital alternative to traditional methods of prescription information. In 49 states, pharmacies can now offer a paperless alternative to the traditional leaflets given with every prescription. See below to see if your state is on the list.

Although the Board of Pharmacy has not issued written approval, current state regulations do not require medication information to be provided to patients on paper.
** Although the Board of Pharmacy has not issued written approval, current state regulations do not require medication information to be provided to patients on paper when prescriptions are picked-up in the pharmacy. However, regulations do require that medication information must be provided to the patient on paper when the patient does not receive the prescription at the pharmacy (such as by delivery) or where communication barriers prohibit oral communication

What are the potential savings?

Below are cost saving examples from two different pharmacies. Assuming your pharmacy buys in bulk (considered as being 40 reams, about 200K sheets, at a time) one sheet of paper will cost your pharmacy $0.01. The average prescription prints three sheets of written information. The average toner costs $150 per 25K sheets of paper. Lastly, the average off-site shredding cost for biweekly pickup is $174/month and once monthly pickup is $100/month.

Pharmacy A yearly savings (they fill about 100 prescriptions/day):

  • Cost of paper: $1,095/year
  • Cost of toner: $657/year
  • Cost of once monthly pickup for off-site shredding: $1200/year
  • Total: $2,952 (Total is about $6,237 if items not purchased in bulk)

Pharmacy B yearly savings (they fill about 400 prescriptions/day):

  • Cost of paper: $4,380/year
  • Cost of toner: $2,628/year
  • Cost of biweekly pickup for off-site shredding: $2,088
  • Total: $9,096 (Total is about $22,236 if items not purchased in bulk)
